Have you ever been the unfortunate victim of owning a water-logged cell phone? Maybe you were a little too careless by the pool one day, or maybe you slipped and dropped your mobile in the toilet at a local restaurant. No matter how it happens, it is no fun watching your shiny electronic phone suddenly  Read More →

It may not have the same charm as the Flying Pasties , but Takara Tomy ’s Neckphones definitely have the “it” factor. Perfect for lounging in a nearby water hole (or watering hole, we suppose), this blow-up neck pillow has a pair of stereo speakers strategically placed near your ear canals, and there’s even a pouch that we’d never, ever trust to keep your PMP safe from the liquids below. We suppose you could also...

We’re still waiting for flying cars, laser guns and teleportation devices, but it looks like we can scratch one childhood dream off the list: touchable holograms . According to the NTDTV report posted after the jump, researchers at Japan’s Tokyo University have managed to concoct holograms that not only react to touch, but that also create the sensation of touch, itself. Apparently, and not surprisingly, an integral part of the system...

Nothing like a great time-lapse video to get you to slow down, take a breath, and realize that–finally–it’s Saturday. This is a really nice one, shot with the Canon 5D and the 5D MK II, in and around Tokyo. Great work, but that watermark is really distracting. You can see more work from the videographer, Samuel Cockedey, at  Read More →

Japan may have their own 1:1 scale Gundam keeping watch on their country, but China is responding with a robot of its very own, namely a famous Transformer and the leader of the Autobots. This 33-foot tall (10 meter) replica of Optimus Prime is definitely a super heavyweight contender weighing-in at 6 tons and stands vigil  Read More →

At a recently opened Burger King in Japan, customers can get a Whopper, french fries, a Coke and a shower, too — not the wet and naked kind, but a “musical shower,” designed to drench your newly sated ears in delicious sounds. According to Engadget, certain booths at Japanese BKs feature docks for your iPod and a clear, bowl-shaped speaker hanging above the table. As a result, your personalized tunes rain down on your table...

Hey, they say beauty’s in the eye of the beholder, but we’re going to go out on a limb here and call this one like we see it: NEC ’s LifeTouch Android tablet isn’t a looker, in our opinion. That said, this 7-incher runs Android 2.1 and packs an ARM Cortex A8 processor. Although it’s scheduled for release in Japan in October, it turns out that it’ll be sold directly to businesses, so don’t hope to grab...

Of all of the 3D-capable desktops in the works, this is certainly one of them! First seen last month , Fujitsu’s new Esprimo FMV FH550/3AM sports a 20-inch (1,600 x 900) display, a 3D webcam, Blu-ray drive, Intel Core i3-350M CPU (2.26GHz) CPU, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, five USB 2.0 ports, SD/Memory Stick slot, two digital TV tuners, Windows 7 Home Premium — and of course, those 3D glasses. In addition to supporting 3…  Read More →

We imagine that there will have been an inordinate number of sick days claimed yesterday in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, as the iPad went available for sale in the aforementioned nations. The price of the device, as well as data plans for the 3G model, vary greatly from country to country, so if you’ve not already done so, hit up your respective online Apple webstore to check out how...

You know, the thing about the future is, it’ll probably come from Japan . Only yesterday we saw mammoth 50TB magnetic tapes , and today we’re hearing the home of Nikon has come up with a new writing method for NAND flash memory that dramatically reduces the already humble power requirements of SSDs. Using their hot new single-cell self-boost technique, University of Tokyo researchers have been able to lower operational voltages down...

With international pre-orders now being taken, more data plan details have started emerging for Apple’s iPad. We now know that Rogers will be charging Canadians pretty similarly to how AT&T treats American 3G users , albeit with the inclusion of a 5GB monthly data cap on the pricier tariff. O2 has also outed its plans, though it’s not much better news in the UK where it’s matching Orange’s pricing with a 3GB monthly...

For the past few years, a beloved staple of our technological upbringing has been dying a slow, painful death before our very eyes. Now, one major company has taken it upon itself to pull the plug on its trademark floppy disk, effectively putting an end to the 3.5-inch era. On April 23rd, Sony announced that it would begin phasing out the sale of its floppy disks in Japan, confirming that all sales within the country will come to a complete...
