From Ropid (the proto-fascist baby bot) to Watson (the Jeopardy-smashing IBM supercomputer), we’ve been somewhat wary of where robot technology is heading. But our friends at Engadget have stumbled...
By Andrew Liszewski I never actually owned one, but the Big Trak (or Bigtrak for our European readers) is one of those toys that makes me long for the 80’s and what I consider to be the glory days of toys. (Yep, I’ve reached that age when things were definitely better when I was a kid.) The 6-wheeled Big Trak featured a displayless…

By Andrew Liszewski If there’s anything model railroad enthusiasts like it’s authenticity, and that’s exactly what Hornby is striving for with their new line of digital sound locomotives. Instead of using a central speaker to reproduce the sounds of the trains running around the miniature countryside, each engine has its own...
By Andrew Liszewski Alphie II was another one of those 80’s toys I never owned, but it still brings back fond memories of my childhood. It was a robot-looking learning toy that used index cards and a series of buttons to teach math, colors and other basic skills, with a healthy mix of robotic sound effects thrown in for good measure. Now...
Soon, you’ll need more than two hands to count the number of Android phones on the market. At this rate, it seems inevitable that the number of phones running Google’s open source operating system will eventually outnumber the number of iPhones, which run Apple’s proprietary (and closed) operating system. It’s a situation...

The offer seems to be open to everyone and the price will adjust currency accordingly. The security suite is compatible with

This is a crazy fun demo of the new Avatar toys by Mattel. Each toy includes a little card that is scannable via webcam and creates an on-screen augmented reality robot or character. While this is old hat for most of us, Mattel is quite proud of being ahead of the curve and for good reason. You can see…

It seems like I’ve covered an exhaustive amount of iPhone cases from handcrafted to high-tech. But today I stumbled upon this cute case made specifically for Google Android phones. The case is designed for a T-Mobile G1 phone, but can be custom-ordered for any Android phone. It’s lined in felt to prevent scratches, and of course features...
As commercial robotics improve, robot kits are also reaching new levels of sophistication. The most recent example of this trend comes in the form of the new Remo (remote brain) Humanoid Kit robot. Equipped with high-quality CCD cameras for image processing and pressure sensors on its feet for balance, the robot employs the use of Bluetooth technology...
A new, even cuter, Japanese robot has hit the scene called ROPID . Developed by Tomotaka Takahashi of Robo Garage at Kyoto University , the tiny robot can respond to voice commands and actually has a mouth that moves when it speaks. In addition to its communication features, the ROPID can supposedly walk, run, jump faster than many other similarity...
