We know that we’ve said this before, but we officially have our first Tweet from space! The message sent by astronaut Mike Massimino back in May ? That doesn’t count anymore. Massimino’s quip from orbit was not sent “live,” but was actually posted by ground control, to whom he’d e-mailed his missive. Now, Timothy Creamer has bumped Massimino out of the Twitter history books by updating his status live from orbit. In the wee hours of Friday morning (EST), Creamer posted the message, “Hello Twitterverse! We r now LIVE tweeting from the International Space Station…

Astronauts set to enjoy space sushi for the first time
When Expedition 22 launched yesterday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, it carried not only three astronauts destined for the International Space Station, but raw seafood as well. Apparently that’s what happens when you train a trio of astronauts in Japan: they turn into sushi nuts. Luckily one of the astronauts is a capable sushi...
Video: Butterfly born in space flaps its wings in zero G
That little guy you see up above is a butterfly in a case. Sure, sure, nothing too special about that, right? Well, guess again — that butterfly is on the International Space Station. In space . Take a tour of the International Space Station, right here
Let’s take a fascinating video tour of the International Space Station (ISS), where we float in microgravity from the Soyuz on one end all the way to the Space Shuttle on the other. As you can see, it really is a series of tubes, and my, hasn’t this thing gotten huge? We especially like the sign that reads, “Speed Limit 17,500 mph.”...

Space elevator competition heats up, closer to reality
You’ve probably heard of the concept of a space elevator, climbing a 22,000 mile long cable that’s attached to a satellite in geostationary orbit over the Earth’s equator. Sounds crazy, but the concept is edging ever closer toward reality. NASA is offering a first prize of $1.1 million to anyone who can create a space elevator...

Gratuitous Space Battles officially blows up thousands of space ships
If I’d known Gratuitous Space Battles was going live this week, I would have adjusted the wallet threat level upwards. You know how the space combat scenes in Battlestar Galactica were terrible and epic and oddly serene, all at once? This game is like that. It has lovely graphics, a lot of depth, an alarming amount of replayability, and...
NASA aims to upgrade its “space internet” by 2018
In space, no one can hear you Tweet. Well, that’s not entirely true, but what is true is space Internet is a strange hodgepodge of communication systems, and collectively it all largely sucks. A new plan by NASA, however, will result in the agency consolidating its Space Network, Near Earth Network and Deep Space Network  Read More →
