By Evan Ackerman I don’t know enough about molecular biology for how this works to make any sense to me, but apparently, researchers at NYU have created an autonomous bipedal walking robot out of a single strand of DNA with a linkage in the middle. I’m going to just let them explain how it works: The walking device consists of a strand of DNA that contains a 5’,5’ linkage in the middle. One leg is called L-E and the other is called L-O. It walks on a track consisting of a series of stem-loops (T1-T4) that are part of a stiff DX motif. It …

DARPA job posting talks of developing an autonomous, grenade-wielding robot
DARPA ’s just put up a pretty interesting job posting… if you’re the wary-of-our-future-being-controlled-by- robots type, anyway. The call involves a new research and development program called ARM. Basically, DARPA’s looking to build a robot that can use its arms to dexterously and autonomously grasp objects. The quote...

‘Tequilabot’ May Be the Greatest Robot Built for a Restaurant, Ever
What does it take for a simple advertisement to become a full-blown Web phenomenon? The folks at Cantina, a Mexican restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama, hope a low-budget commercial featuring a tequila-drinking robot will do the trick (and sell some food, too). BuzzFeed could be joking about this commercial only costing $100, but judging by Tequilabot’s...
Gestural Computing Is The New Multitouch
By Evan Ackerman Remember back when the display in Minority Report was the future technology that everyone was talking about? Well, now it’s the past, ’cause MIT’s Media Lab has come up with a display that can potentially do all that fancy gestural stuff, except without the gloves. Called BiDi (for Bi-Directional), the display works...

Clear to launch two new VoIP-enabled WiMAX modems with built-in ATA
Clear may be expanding its WiMAX offerings with the select launch of two new feature-rich WiMAX modems targeting home consumers. In addition to WiMAX connectivity, both modems offer VoIP functionality and feature integrated ATA, an emerging trend that obviates the need for an external ATA device for VoIP. The first WiMAX device is the Series G...
This must be the coolest watch ever built
This must be the coolest watch ever built
In a world of digital watches and oscillating quartz tech, feats of mechanical wizardry are still capable of raising an eyebrow or two. Call us astonished as we look at this Mysterious Automatic Double Axis Tourbillon, a transparent watch by master craftsman Thomas Prescher . Marvel at its intricate gravity-defying movement, hanging out there...
[CES 2010] World’s First Sex Robot Unveiled At AEE [NSFW]
By Evan Ackerman Next door to CES is the Adult Entertainment Expo, and as a journalist, it’s my obligation to go. And I heard that the world’s first sex robot was going to be making its (her?) debut. On Friday I spent about 10 minutes interviewing the CEO of True Companion about the robot to get an overview and some background, and we’ve...

Watch Nexus One get built, then beaten mercilessly
This might be the best entry yet in Google’s Nexus One video series . Today’s double feature is marked by the testing and manufacturing of the device, and while the all-white facilities and assembly lines can be interesting in their own right, we love nothing more than seeing just how Google and HTC stress test its labor of love. Watch...
Acme mousetrap uses compressed air to splat furries
With a gazillion ways to kill mice — some stylish , some utterly, utterly erroneous — you’d think there was no room for a new mousetrap. Wrong! Built by a bloke called Jake Easton, the trap is housed in a beautifully designed, shiny, aluminum case. It works using a combination of complex series of solenoids, electronic control circuitry...

If Santa drove a Chevy, his would have 3,000 lights on it just like this one
It all started 25 years ago, when Kris Marshall of Iowa decked the halls hood of his truck with a strand of Christmas lights. Fast forward to today and he’s still carrying on the tradition of the “Christmas Truck,” but now his truck is 3,000 lights strong. According to Jalopnik : It’s amazingly nontechnical, it’s...
MIT’s Autonomous Helicopter: What If Big Dog Could Fly?
The latest Micro Air Vehicle from MIT does an incredible job of balancing itself in-air. Not to mention that the helicopter models its surroundings so well it could probably fly over to the fridge and make you a sandwich. (more…)  Read More →
