TED 5000 displays your exact power usage
December 10th, 2009 admin
One way to save energy is to be fully aware of how much you’re using. That’s the mission of The Energy Detective 5000, otherwise known as TED 5000. Connect a couple of sensors to your main power switch box, plug the powerline gateway into an electrical outlet, connect it to your network, and suddenly you can access a graphical interface showing you exactly how many kilowatts you’re using over days, weeks and months. We hooked up the TED 5000 in our Midwest Test Facility, and it turns out we’re not using as much energy as we thought.

Ah, children: those lovable balls of built-up energy. If only there was a way to harness that force? That’s exactly what designers Aaron Tsui, Irina Kozlovskaya, Jasen Mehta and Sergio Silva had in mind when they came up with “Rocco, the energy pal.” Rocco is a rocking horse that, when rocked, charges up its flashlight ears....
Scant decades ago, a ball drop in Times Square was more likely to take place in one of its infamous adult theaters than in the square itself. These days, when there is not even traffic in the iconic plaza , even the historic crystal ball which sees in the New Year is clean. The new energy efficient LED ball, and the glowing “2010”...
Filed under: App Store , SDK Apple quietly tweaked the interface of iTunes Connect for App Store developers today, changing the way applications are listed. It changed from the list format that was previously used, and now shows a group of five app icons in a row, which gives a more complete look at your apps. Below the icon, it now shows the...
Earlier this year I reviewed the WD TV HD Media Player. At the time I appreciated the fact that it could handle just about any video format I threw at it, but wished that it would also connect to my home network and other services. In addition, the interface worked, but I found it to

Every continent, almost by definition, is surrounded mostly by oceans. Big, powerful, wave-filled oceans. Harnessing the energy of waves has recently moved out of science-fiction and into reality as Oregon gets America’s first wave park. Ocean Power Technologies is building a wave park off the coast of Reedsport, Oregon. When complete in...
Browser maker Opera Software has released its latest ‘State of the Mobile Web’ report this morning, which is based on the usage of its Opera Mini browser for mobile phones. They do this every month, and the conclusion is always the same: mobile web usage around the world keeps on growing and growing . The Norwegian company says Opera...
We really love the boys and girls over at RIM, but if you haven’t already noticed, they’re pretty much stuck in 1998. Why do we say that? Well, RIM’s co-CEO Mike Lazaridis (who is absolutely brilliant) started spewing off his nonsense on data conservation at MWC and how “manufacturers had better start building more efficient...
OLED displays are not just for consumer electronics. With a dash of creativity, they can be modeled into a nice dress. English fashion designer Gareth Pugh put together an outfit made of flexible OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays. OLEDs are gaining popularity because they are more energy efficient than traditional LED screens. U.K....
From designer Haneum Lee comes a concept that could see streets lit while keeping trash off of them, too. At the base of every street light is a wastebasket that turns what it can use into compost, while using methane gas to generate the power needed to keep the lights on. It’s an interesting thought, to be sure — one that may not...
Dishwashers are big time power hogs. Between heating the wash water, and then heating up the air to dry the cleaned dishes, most dishwashers suck enough power to require a special high current electrical supply. A lot of the power used during the dry cycle is needed to reduce the effects of humidity left over from the wash cycle, so the Engineers...
