The Motorola/Verizon Droid is a brand new phone today. Like many smartphones before it, the Droid has been rooted so that owners of the Android 2.0-based smartphone can install multitouch support (including pinch-to-zoom gestures), enhanced themes, and other previously forbidden goodies. Cyanogen, a well-known Android modder, tweeted this afternoon “Droid does… ROOT” and linked to an Android message board where the exploit is posted . Zinx Verituse, the hacker who discovered the exploit, posted the essential details and links to the file so the modders can get down to business. So, what does this mean for Droid owners? An rooted Droid means the user…

Nook Torn Open, Hacked and Rooted
Barely weeks after its launch, Barnes & Noble’s Android-based Nook e-reader has been hacked and “rooted” (root, or full system access, has been obtained). This has been done by a loose team of hackers who, like the iPhone Dev Team, are documenting their work on a wiki — Nook Devs. If you tear open a Nook (which the...

Motorola releases its Android 2.1 update schedule for the DROID/MILESTONE and the CLIQ/DEXT
After receiving heavy criticism for its premature announcement of the Android 2.1 update for the DROID, Motorola has decided that “transparency” is now its favorite buzz word and has released an Android 2.1 update schedule for its current lineup of Android handsets. Though a nice gesture, the update schedule is short on details and...

Barnes and Noble Nook gets rooted, innards exposed
We wish we were there to see the look of surprise on the face of the folks at nookdev when they disassembled the Nook and discovered that the customized Android 1.5 OS that powered the latest and greatest e-reader was stored on a removable microSD card. Doing what most great hackers would do, they popped out the SD card, inserted it into their...
Motorola Milestone reaches milestone, gets rooted
Motorola Milestone reaches milestone, gets rooted
Following its American cousin by just a few short weeks, the Motorola Milestone has now been rooted by a handful of enterprising hackers, opening the door to the usual array of forbidden fruits that Moto never intended you to have: WiFi tethering, wacky Sense ports, fully customized ROMs, and the list goes on. Proceed at your own risk, but seriously...

Android 2.0.1 security flaw allows bypass of DROID screen lock
Does your phone have security flaws? DROID does. Sorry, we couldn’t resist. It looks like a flaw found in the Android 2.0.1 code will allow a user to bypass the lock screen on your beloved Motorola DROID. Now, someone can’t just walk over to your DROID and pop the lock, there is one, fairly large, prerequisite that needs to be fulfilled…...

HTC DROID Eris gets unboxed
One of our connects just blessed us with a couple shots of the HTC DROID Eris and graciously unboxed the retail packaging. We could bore you with meaningless details about how the phone is thinner and lighter than the Sprint HTC Hero, feels much better in the hand, and is generally the best Android device besides the Motorola DROID our connect...
Review: The Motorola Droid
Review: The Motorola Droid
A few days ago we got Motrola’s Droid in the mail. The device is quite awesome. Beyond being offered on Verizon’s network (which consistently squelches AT&T in coverage and speed) the phone is forged from super-solid (and stylish) hardware. Plus it runs freaking Android 2.0 as its OS. From reviewer Priya Ganapati: The Droid runs...

Verizon to Offer Tethering For Motorola Droid
Verizon Wireless is set to inaugurate tethering on the newly released Motorola Droid phone next year — at a price. Most consumers will have to pay an additional $30 a month to use the feature. “Tethering will not be available at launch, but it is scheduled,” says Brenda Raney, spokesperson for Verizon Wireless. Tethering allows users...

He’s a Droid; I’m an iPhone: My Droid Keyboard Fail
By now you know . . . my guy loves his Droid, I love my iPhone . And I can’t resist any opportunity to pit the two gadgets head to head, especially if it means I can defend my iPhone against his Droid superiority complex. One of my guy’s chief complaints about his Droid is that the onscreen keyboard is pretty tricky to use. Retraining...
Everything you need to know about the Droid, data plans, and Exchange email
Droid buyers may not immediately realize it, but a few need-to-knows regarding private and business email connectivity need to be considered before signing on the dotted line. There’s a lot of talk these days about a surcharge that Verizon is allegedly imposing on Droid users who wish to access corporate Exchange email. The Droid requires an...
