Filed under: iPhone , App Review I am a BIG fan of HDR (high dynamic range) photography. It’s a method of shooting multiple exposures at different shutter speed settings to bring out the detail in shadows and enhance the color of objects you take pictures of. It is particularly useful for landscape photography, and not so good for taking photos of moving objects because they vary in location from frame to frame. There are some really nice HDR applications for the Mac that can process photos taken with digital SLRs ( Photomatix Pro and Hydra are …

Kirlian High Voltage Contact Print Photography Device
By Andrew Liszewski If you’re looking for a new way to justify that $1,000+ DSLR you just bought, and have run out of objects to stick in front of your macro lens, you might want to give Kirlian photography a shot. It uses high voltage applied to everyday objects to create unique exposures of the corona discharge, and thanks to this $295...

Cool Capture: Photography Class Collection From ladyisadorable
Reader ladyisadorable recently added some stunning shots to the Cool Capture group: I love the repetition of the lamp posts in this picture. I just wish that I had backed up more so the top of the lamp hadn’t been cut off. This was taken at the University of Georgia. I used to live in Athens and my friends and I would wander around campus...

iPhone App Devs Not Allowed to Use Geolocation Just for Ads
Apple has posted a news bulletin for iPhone developers, informing them they may not use the phone’s geolocation features primarily for delivering targeted ads. What that means is if you’re playing a game that doesn’t use geolocation for gameplay, and all it’s doing is tracking your location to serve location-based ads,...

Patent suggests location-based social networking for iPhone
Filed under: Rumors , iPhone Imagine you and a friend are on a phone call, and both of you own iPhones . You’re trying to meet up somewhere downtown in a city neither of you know very well, so the best answer you can give your friend when he asks, “Where are you now?” is “Uhhh…” followed by several seconds of...

Tricking your iPhone to play TV shows and movies in portrait view
Filed under: How-tos , iTunes , iPhone , iPod touch By default, movies and TV shows in the iPod portion of the iPhone and iPod touch play in landscape view. Do You Snap Pics at Concerts Despite No Camera Rules?
It’s safe to say that if you have a cell phone, you’ve probably snapped a few photos at a concert to post on Facebook or to send as an accompaniment to a tweet. And although the typical “no photos/camera” rule seems pretty archaic in these days of super-powerful and slim digital point-and-shoot cameras, some bands and venues...

Eye-Fi Geeks Out with Direct FTP Transfers
Eye-Fi has added a small, nerdy, but significant new feature to its Wi-Fi-enabled SD memory cards: FTP transfers. While beaming your photos straight to a sharing site such as Flickr is a very sweet trick, not everyone wants to send pictures direct to the web without editing them first. Adding FTP uploads gives the benefits of instant (ish), off-site...

Video: iPhone Apps for Shutterbugs
Let’s face it: The iPhone’s camera kind of stinks. And if you suck at photography, it really makes it obvious. Fortunately, there’s a host of iPhone apps out there to beautify your shots. The ones I like most maintain the iPhone’s principle of keeping things simple. In this episode of the Gadget Lab video podcast, I demonstrate...

Appstand iPhone Picture Frame
By Andrew Liszewski I’m proud to say I’ve never bought a digital photo frame as a gift for someone, even though they’re a particularly popular item around the holidays. But I would consider gifting the Appstand, which is nothing more than a cleverly designed picture frame for the iPhone. Using the slideshow option it instantly...

Photoshop.com Mobile ( iTunes link ) has been downloaded more than 6 million times since it was released last October and is the second most popular free photography app in the App Store. The app lets you share...
