Completed Gigantor giant robot goes on display in Japan
The giant robot known as Gigantor (called Tetsujin in Japan) we mentioned back in July has finally been completed and is now on display in Kobe’s Wakamatsu Park. Standing a full 60 feet tall and weighing about 50 tons, the robot statue cost 135 million yen ($1.5 million) to build as a tourist attraction and tribute to the character’s creator Mitsuteru Yokoyama. You can check out video of the enormous robot getting its finishing touches here . Via Impress Watch

Coming straight out of Japan is the KDDI Polaris Robot. Looking like the spawn of Sony’s failed Rolly MP3 player, this thing is actually a dock for cellphones that allows them to wirelessly connect to your TV or monitor. This lets you watch video or view photos stored on board without any hassle. It actually looks pretty slick and, if it...
If you thought prototyping was something for serious fabricators and manufacturers think again. Imagine if you will, being able to input a design into a computer for building a Lego model and then having a robot to build that model for you. Well you don’t have to imagine too hard as a couple of students have laid out

Mechanical fireflies could help create a new kind of 3-D display, say researchers at MIT. Standing in for the bioluminescent beetles will be LED-fitted, remotely controlled micro-helicopters that can be choreographed electronically to display shapes and images as they hover in midair. The project, called Flyfire, would use RC helicopters similar...
As commercial robotics improve, robot kits are also reaching new levels of sophistication. The most recent example of this trend comes in the form of the new Remo (remote brain) Humanoid Kit robot. Equipped with high-quality CCD cameras for image processing and pressure sensors on its feet for balance, the robot employs the use of Bluetooth technology...

Developed by the UK-based Shadow...
I love it when someone takes a boring household item that we all need – like a power strip – and turns it into something fun. Case in point: the Electric Man power strip from Urban Outfitters. This cute robot-shaped power strip has four grounded outlets – one on each of the little guy’s appendages. The main power switch...
